ID 4772/4772G – Generative AI in Interior Design and Architecture - This course introduces interior design students to the rapidly evolving role of generative artificial intelligence in design practice, with a focus on practical application, workflow integration, and critical evaluation. Designed as an entry point rather than an advanced or technical course, it assumes no prior experience with AI tools and builds knowledge progressively throughout the semester.
Students will develop fluency with a range of AI tools used in contemporary interior design through a layered structure of lectures, demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and guided discussions. Emphasis is placed on prompt engineering, iterative design thinking, and strategic tool selection, enabling students to work confidently across multiple platforms rather than relying on a single application. Weekly assignments mirror real-world design scenarios, moving from early concept exploration to refined, presentation-ready visuals.
In addition to technical skill development, the course addresses ethical considerations, authorship, and the designer’s responsibility to maintain creative agency when working with AI-assisted processes. Readings and discussions support a critical understanding of human–AI collaboration, positioning AI as a creative partner that supports design thinking rather than replacing it. By the end of the semester, students will complete a comprehensive final project that reimagines an existing studio design using a curated, AI-assisted workflow, demonstrating both conceptual rigor and professional competency.
