This course introduces students to criminology, focusing on the nature, function, and causes of crime and criminal behaviors from a sociological perspective. We will cover a broad range of topics within and around the subfield of sociological criminology, including theoretical explanations of crime, the measurement of crime and crime statistics, as well as techniques of crime prevention and societal reaction to crime. While presenting a sociological perspective, students will broaden their understanding of crime and criminal justice with intersectional social inequality issues regarding race/ethnicity, gender, social class, and immigration status.
