Course description:
4070 Weed Science and the Environment (3) F Prereq: BIOL 1001, 1002, CHEM 1001, 1002; or equivalent;
Weed biology and economic importance of weeds in the diverse agriculture of Louisiana. Weed control methods, herbicide mechanisms of action, classification, and fate in plants and soils (absorption, translocation, and metabolism of herbicides). pesticide application, labeling, and safety. Herbicide resistance and integrated weed management programs.
The laboratories will emphasize grass and broadleaf weed and seed identification, sprayer calibration and equipment, herbicide symptomology, pesticide labels, formulations, and safety, and assignments on practical farmer problems and making recommendations for integrated weed management in major agronomic and horticultural crops of Louisiana. Field trips will supplement classroom activities as and when needed. A majority of labs will be held at the LSU AGCenter agronomy teaching greenhouse located at 4117 Gourrier Avenue.
